Scaffolding, mobile access towers, ladders and work platforms are welded in large numbers from thin-walled 6xxx tubes and extrusions – often on robots. MA-4043 (ER4043) prevents solidification cracking at high dilution on thin walls; MA-5183 and MA-5356 give higher weld strength where load-bearing joints need it. For robot lines MA-4043 comes in 80 kg Eco and 140 kg Jumbo drums, MA-5183 and MA-5356 in 140 kg Jumbo and 240 kg Jumbo XL drums.

What matters in series production of access equipment

  • High volumes on robots: drums instead of spools mean fewer wire changes; consistent wire cast keeps the wire tip on the joint.
  • Soft AlSi wire over long conduits: roller-guided conduits and feed assist drives – see long-distance wire feeding for aluminium.
  • Weld zone of 6xxx profiles: the heat-affected zone loses strength – the design and the testing of the finished product (e.g. EN 131 for ladders, EN 1004 for mobile access towers) take this into account.
  • Appearance: AlSi weld metal turns dark grey after anodising – use MA-5356 for anodised visible parts.

Frequently asked questions

Which welding wire is used for aluminium ladders?

Rungs and stiles from 6060/6063 profiles are usually welded with ER4043 (AlSi5), which prevents solidification cracking on thin walls. Where higher weld strength is needed, ER5183 is used.

ER4043 or ER5356 for scaffolding?

ER4043 is more crack-resistant on 6xxx profiles; ER5356 gives higher strength (about 250 MPa vs. 120 MPa) and a nearly colour-matched weld after anodising.

Which drums are available for robot welding?

MA-4043 in 80 kg Eco and 140 kg Jumbo drums; MA-5183 and MA-5356 in 140 kg Jumbo and 240 kg Jumbo XL drums.

Can I test the wire first?

Yes – request a free test spool.
