International Welding Engineer and managing director
Robert Lahnsteiner is an engineer and International Welding Engineer (IWE). He trained in telecommunications and electronics at HTL Braunau and joined Fronius in 1983, where he built up broad expertise in welding technology over eighteen years.
Since 2001 he has been an entrepreneur and, together with Martin Erl, runs the group of companies formed by Erl GmbH, Erl Automation and MIGAL.CO GmbH (erl group). MIGAL.CO manufactures aluminium welding wire in Landau an der Isar and develops wire feeding technology and welding software.
His core field is the welding of aluminium: filler metals, alloys, metallurgy and wire manufacturing. He also works on sensors, software and AI applications for monitoring welding processes and for documentation to standards. He prefers to check things by measurement: several of his findings from wire production contradict common textbook opinion.
Within DVS, the German Welding Society, he has worked for around 30 years on technical committee FA03 “Arc welding”, where he has been deputy chairman for many years. He is a long-standing member of working group 2.4 and chairman of working group 2.4.4 “MIG welding of aluminium”, which drew up the DVS technical bulletin 0913 parts 1 to 3. He was active in working group 2.4.8 “Arc brazing” and contributed to the DVS technical bulletins 0938-1 and 0938-2 on arc brazing as well as to DVS 0604 on the design and processing of weldable aluminium die castings.
